With the General Election only two months away, IHC is turning up the heat on election candidates to commit to fairer treatment of disabled students in schools.

IHC’s game app to help young people with intellectual disabilities learn to manage money – and life – is being put through its paces by students in some Wellington secondary schools.

Young Kāpiti Coast artist Max Hinds-Brown has won the IHC Art Awards for 2023 with a beautiful retro painting of a red chair. There was a strong showing by Kāpiti artists in this year’s awards, with them winning first and third prizes.

Photography has always been a feature of the mixed media IHC Arts Awards, with strong images competing for attention among hundreds of paintings, drawings, sculpture and textiles. Last year IHC launched a separate competition – Capture the Moment – to give photographers their own platform to showcase their art.

Four exceptional works by three prize-winning IHC Art Awards artists have been selected to showcase a limited edition run of AF Drinks’ 31-pack of non-alcoholic cocktails.

Dr Terry Caseley devoted his career to making sure people with intellectual disabilities were given the chance to live their best lives. The former President of IHC and influential Christchurch paediatrician died in Christchurch on 18 May 2023, at the age of 89.

Indika Mendis has won the IHC Matariki Drawing Competition with a pastel drawing in which creatures emerge in an explosion of colour.

‍

Christchurch woman Linda Hider turned 70 in June, and she hopes to live for much longer. Linda is raising two of her grandchildren – her son’s 12-year-old boy and 11-year-old daughter – and wants to be there for as long as they need her.

ANZ is making its banking services accessible to more customers by creating easy-to-read documents. Earlier this year the bank sent a team to an IHC Easy Read training session run in Wellington by the Council for Intellectual Disability in New South Wales.

‍

The new Chair of the IHC Member Council, Lynne Renouf, comes with 45 years’ experience as an activist.
