On November 8 Hamish Taverner was awarded the Attitude Leadership Award at the 2017 Attitude Awards held at Auckland’s ANZ Viaduct Event Centre.

Hamish, who is currently the Chair of the IHC Rangitikei Association, received the Award in recognition of his work advocating for the rights of people with disabilities, which he has been doing for more than 20 years.

“My main goal is make sure people with learning disability have their right to have their say and treat the same as other people,” says Hamish.

Beyond his work for IHC, Hamish has just finished in the role of National Chairperson of People First NZ, and is currently serving his second term as Central Region President for the organisation.

He is a board member of the Association of Study for Intellectual Disability, a senior evaluator of Disability Support Services and has liaised with the Ministry of Health in an advisory capacity.

Currently, Hamish is working for Malatest International as a researcher, interviewing people living in residential homes.

Hamish travels extensively both domestically and internationally as a delegate representing various disability-focussed organisations, including as a Global Messenger with Special Olympics.
