Explore hidden worlds at A Glittering Gem is Not Enough
A Glittering Gem is Not Enough is an immersive, sensory exploration through an enchanted forest, hosted by IDEA Services’ studio, Art Space as part of the Dunedin Fringe Festival.
Holly Aitchison, who is a Support Worker at Art Space, says the idea to host their own event was came about after noticing a decline in accessible events as part of the Dunedin Fringe Festival. “There are a lot of evening events that aren’t always accessible for people with physical and intellectual disabilities,” says Holly. “It can be a real struggle to get a wheelchair taxi or transport assistance in the evening.”
After looking at the supplies they had available, the artists who attend Art Space came together to develop the idea of creating their own enchanted forest.
Artist, Julia Young, has been working hard for more than two months on her piece for the event. “I have created a sculpture of a mystical vampire cat,” says Julia. “It has three magical tails, six legs and two faces to show its different personalities.
Andrea Wade has created multiple pieces for the event as well as assisted Holly with organisation. She is excited to put the final touches on the event, “my favourite thing about creating art is when it’s finished,” she quips.
The event is wheelchair accessible and is suitable for theatregoers with Autism and other sensory-related needs – touch and exploration are encouraged!
A Glittering Gem is Not Enough has been made possible with support from Dunedin Dream Brokerage, an organisation that works with Dunedin creatives to broker the temporary use of space for their projects and performances.
