Heart With Man's Face Inside

I am a Pasifika woman who had a brain injury at ten years old. This piece is about me, a colourful woman's body fills the space and barely contains my heart, which is both protected and whole. In my heart are both joy and tears. But still flowers reach out from my heart, flowers that show the beauty and new life that connects with the world.

This piece was made by gluing the violins onto the canvas with paint poured onto the canvas. Bricharne has made many of this type of work with violins, but this is the first piece in some years. She adds embellishments such as second-hand jewellery that she chooses and other items available to her.

Madeleine Wilson does a range of work but has a particular passion for creating New Zealand's landscapes and geometric patterns. She likes the mountainous shapes that allow her to create depth and perspective, bringing the images to life. Inspired by Vincent Van Gough, the palette used helps draws the viewer into artwork; making the viewer question what they see, but at the same time instantly connect with the image.

(Trip to) Georgina's House

This is a powerful visionary artwork depicting David's first planned overseas trip, where he hopes to visit his good friend Georgina, and her grandchildren. David has captured an impression of what he imagines Georgina's house might look like when he flies over by plane, before arriving in London. He first used a marker pen to draw a base-layer of rhythmic patterns; he then added layers of paint using a range of brush marks, combining thin washes with opaque highlights.

Timothy began this painting using his own carefully organised process, arranging large, alphabet stencils in a neat and deliberate manner. Like a well-seasoned signwriter, he painstakingly outlined the letters across the canvas before filling them with bold, arbitrary colours. This work displays an interesting contrast between text and rich, painterly textures.

Autumn Leaves

This delicate yet striking watercolour painting is based on a study of Autumn leaves that Steven arranged on his desk. He prefers to work directly from still life objects, basing his imagery on observations. With no pre-drawing, Steven used a fine brush to apply the outlines of the leaves directly onto the paper. He then filled the shapes with soft washes, carefully balancing the composition with contrasting warm and cool colours.
