Over the April school holidays, Charlotte visited her dad on his farm in Oamaru, and this piece captures her memory of that holiday. To develop such a piece, Charlotte brought in a cork board from home, which she then pinned her drawings onto; so this piece has seen many evolutions! If you look closely, you will find many pin-marks scattered throughout the piece. That process has enabled Charlotte, with minimal assistance from her Teacher Aide, to create something amazing! The combination of tools (tearing, pastels, scissors, pencil) and textures (wall paper, card) has given it such depth; surely a testament to her imagination.

Blue and Gold Chandelier

Lynette is extending her “Chandelier” series, but instead of looking at photos of chandeliers she now creates the images from her mind. She loves the colour, light and sparkle of the chandeliers and was inspired to capture the images on canvas. Lynette’s preferred medium is acrylic paint on canvas, as she loves the strength of canvas. Lynette uses her art as a way of changing society’s perception of disability.

This is my Hundertwasser Art painting. I visited the Hundertwasser and this was my favourite piece. I started off by using different colour spray paints to paint the background and then created blue textured squares by gluing different coloured yarn onto the paper then painted it blue. I also created some gold paper that I cut and glued onto my piece just as the artist did with his paintings. I like this piece of art because it makes me happy.

It’s of myself. I am standing on a building. I did buildings because I have an interest in drawing architecture. I did the whole thing from my wheelchair with absolutely no help from other people. I even prepared the board to paint on myself and sanded it down. I did this by sitting it on an easel and turning it around.

And I Walk Through the Night Until I See the Light

The background is the night and the foreground is the light. Starting from dusk to dawn I spend the whole night walking in a dream. When I first started going to Māpura, I wanted to paint about maths until some years into my art practice when I became interested in exploring other subjects. I learned throughout those years from different tutors that I should get out of my comfort zone and so now I’m inspired by many more things. I used to use mainly wet media but now I enjoy using other media like felt tips. I enjoy building structures from lego and that has actually inspired me in my art.
